I’ve just finished my week of nights and today I start my week off. Last Tuesday I was told that I would be finally starting on days. Looking ahead there are a few cool surgeries booked in already so I am excited.
When I was in first opinion practice I removed a few mast cell tumours from patients. The warning is always there to manipulate them as little as possible to avoid degranulation. This is something that I’ve heard about but never seen. Also the heard but never seen is the systemic effects of gastrointestinal ulceration. A postmortem study found a high incidence of perforation as well. I saw both of these things this week for the first time. Many tumours will affect the body however during degranulation this tumour actively attacks the body causing massive hypotension, intestinal bleeding, and shock. These can even lead to DIC. Mast Cell Tumours have a newly gained respect from me, even when doing basic diagnostics such as FNA or biopsy.
Last week I became a member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. They are hosting their annual conference online this year so it’s the perfect opportunity for me to attend. One of the benefits is access to the VECCS rounds monthly online session. I have been binge watching the previous recordings. One on cricothyrotomy was really interesting as in school I was only taught an emergency tracheotomy which does have potential complications. The cricothyrotomy with more pronounced landmarks, and easier access appears to be a really good alternative option. Hopefully I will get to try this out in a cadaver lab at some point before I need to use it.
My designer is now working on the final models ready for the animation. Hopefully this means I will shortly be bringing the story of plaque to a screen near you. This is my first time working on an animation project so am excited to see the impact it has on pet dental health.
I’ve started to look at some data in terms of getting some papers published. I am dyslexic so this is a terrifying idea however essential for applications for residency. Fortunately within veterinary medicine there are so many unanswered questions so I should hopefully be able to fill a gap. My spare time this week went to starting to work my way back through around 2000 cases.
I’ve also come across the Vets, Stay, Go, Diversify mentorship scheme this week. So I’ve found myself a mentor to start working with. For me this is invaluable as there are so many things I do not know, and do not have anyone to ask. Already have some good ideas in progress as to what I need to do to help my chances of getting an ECVS Residency. I will take all the help I can get here as it is so competitive.
This morning we launched the BVDA Conference registration! It’s been a lot of work to get here so very happy about this.
