The end around the bend… (weekly diary #17)

Historic post: this article was originally written earlier in my veterinary career and is preserved as part of the drchris.vet archive.

Lockdown 2

This past week I have been on days. We entered lockdown again on Thursday. With lockdown we are still working as we have been, though the specialist departments have been separated into their own teams. This showed benefit yesterday as one of the teams has to now isolate as a team member tested positive.

CertAVP

I realised the other evening that I am on my final module of my CertAVP, this has been a wild ride as I’ve managed to self-fund this whilst working full time. The fact I am in my last module says two years have flown by. Not entirely sure how this has happened without my noticing (though maybe there are a couple more grey hairs).

I chose to do the CertAVP with the University of Liverpool as the BSAVA Certificate waiting list was too long and I needed to be learning already. By doing it online through E-Learning I could choose my own practical courses I wanted to attend to accompany it. For orthopaedics I did my AOVet Principles of fracture repair course, alongside a feline orthopaedics practical with CentralCPD. For soft tissue I started the ESAVS Soft Tissue Surgery courses – module 1 was amazing and I took away many things I’ve used since – module 2 was cancelled this year because of covid so hopefully next year! I also picked up a laparoscopy and thoracoscopy weekend to cover these techniques as well. Hopefully as things improve with covid I can go back to my learning.

Whilst I achieve my CertAVP on completion of the modules (yay!), I need to pass a synoptic examination to get my named certificate. This would turn it into a CertAVP (Small Animal Surgery) however currently there are no examination dates published next year due to covid. I have registered my interest and just have to be wait to be told more. The upside is that I could potentially spend a month or so after I finish my internship in May studying for this exam.

Looking forward My week of nights start tonight, and I have my final (just so long as I pass) case report for my CertAVP due soon so this will be something I work on through the week.
